How to install TIMKEN cylindrical roller bearings

Installation method: When using a tight fit inner ring, the installation method depends on whether the bearing has a straight or tapered bore. Then install the lock washer and lock nut or clamping end cover to fix the bearing on the shaft shoulder. After the bearing cools down gradually, tighten the lock nut or clamping end cover. When the outer ring rotates, it should be a tight fit with the bearing seat. The bearing seat can be heated to expand. The oil bath method is shown in the completion.

The bearing should not be in direct contact with the heat source. The common method is to place an isolation net a few inches from the bottom of the oil tank and separate the isolation net from the bearing model with a small support block. The bearing must be kept away from any nearby high-temperature heat source to prevent the bearing temperature from being too high and causing the bearing ring hardness to decrease.

Flame heating is usually used. ** Use automatic temperature control equipment. If safety regulations prohibit the use of open hot oil baths, a 15% soluble oil-water mixture can be used. This mixture can be heated to 93°C without creating a flame.Installing straight bore bearingsThermal expansion methodMost applications require an interference fit on the shaft. Installation is easy by heating the bearing until it expands enough to slide easily onto the journal. Two heating methods are commonly used:- Hot oil tank heating- Induction heatingThe first method is to place the bearing in hot oil with a high flash pointThe oil temperature should not exceed 121°C, which is sufficient for most applicationsThe bearing should be heated for 20 or 30 minutes, or until it expands enough to slide easily onto the journalBearings can be installed using induction heatingInduction heating is a fast process, so special care must be taken to prevent temperatures exceeding 93°CTest heating operations are usually required to get the correct heating timeThe temperature of the bearing can be determined based on the fixed melting temperature of the waxAfter the bearing is heated, it should be held vertically against the shoulder and fixed until it cools.

Thermal expansion methodBearing is held up from the bottom by a screenLubricating oilBearing support blockFlame heatingDo not use steam or hot water to clean the bearing, as this will cause rust or corrosion. Do not heat the bearing surface over a flame. Do not heat bearings above 149°C (300°F). WARNING Before heating components, remove any oil or rust inhibitor from them to avoid fire and smoke.

CAUTION Failure to observe the following warnings could result in serious personal injury or death. Arbor punching is an alternative mounting method commonly used for smaller bearings that presses the bearing onto the shaft or into the housing. This method requires an arbor press and a mounting sleeve, as shown in Figure 11. The mounting sleeve should be made of mild steel and have an inside diameter slightly larger than the shaft diameter. The outside diameter of the mounting sleeve should not exceed the shaft shoulder diameter given in the Timken® Spherical Roller Bearings catalog (order number 10446C) at timken.com/catalogs.

The ends of the mounting sleeve should be perpendicular, the inside and outside surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned, and the sleeve should be long enough to ensure that the end of the sleeve is longer than the end of the shaft after the bearing is installed. If the outer ring is tight-fitted into the housing, the outside diameter of the mounting tube should be slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the housing. The inside diameter cannot be smaller than the housing shoulder diameter recommended in the Timken® Spherical Roller Bearing Selection Guide at timken.com/catalogs. Apply light machine oil to the shaft to reduce the force required to press the fitting. Carefully install the bearing on the shaft, making sure it is perpendicular to the centerline of the shaft. Apply steady pressure with the lever to hold the bearing firmly against the shaft or housing shoulder.
